Our Ethos
'Help Me to Help Myself.'
A nursery ethos is the heart of how we care for and teach children. It’s our values, beliefs, and approach that guide everything we do, creating a safe, happy, and inspiring place where every child can learn, grow, and thrive.
Our Ethos
'Help Me to Help Myself'
At our nursery, we believe in empowering children to develop independence and confidence from a young age.
One of the ways we do this is by giving them daily jobs or responsibilities, such as setting the table, self-serving and tidying up after meals, accessing tools to help themselves to rolling snack.
These small tasks help children feel a sense of ownership and pride in their environment, while also teaching them valuable skills that will serve them for a lifetime.
Everything we do from putting on our coats, toileting, accessing resources and more all have underlying independence skills. Children being able to freely access all the above with the support of an adult means children can grow in confidence and capabilities.
We also focus on teaching essential life skills, like cooking and understanding safety in the community, growing our own produce.
Whether it's helping prepare simple snacks or learning about how to stay safe when on outings in our community, our children gain hands-on experience that fosters practical knowledge and encourages problem-solving. These activities are designed to build their self-reliance while reinforcing important lessons about responsibility and care for others.
An important part of our approach includes regular trips around our local community. These outings are not only fun but educational, as they provide opportunities for children to explore and engage with the world around them. From visiting local shops to learning about community services, these experiences enhance their understanding of the environment and help them develop a deeper connection with their surroundings and nature.
Our Environment as a Learning Space & Routines
Our setting environment is one of the most important parts of how children learn. For children aged 0–3, we know developmentally they are not ready to sit and focus in different areas of the room, so it’s essential that our environment is both comforting and interesting to keep them engaged. A well-thought-out space supports children’s learning and development every day. This in turn is where our routines come into practice being developmentally appropriate for our children. Having less stop and start playing for children, eliminating tidy up times and encouraging respect and tidying up throughout. Alongside our together time which becomes optional, short and based around childrens interests and learning needs. Longer periods of free play & outdoor time for our little ones.
